Mule Packing School

Have you ever wanted to learn the art of packing horses and mules for the backcountry?  Our mule packing school is the perfect course for building your skills and confidence to handle your own mule train. Does the thought of riding down the trail leading a string of mules headed for hunting camp put a smile on your face? Or would you simply like to have the skills to able to access remote backcountry like the Idaho Selway-Bitterroot Wilderness and have a steak and a beer instead of freeze dried food and Kool-Aid? 

This is not just a class it’s an adventure in some of the most remote and beautiful country that exists.  The last part of the class will be spent packing and going on a trip in the wilderness. You are sure to have a great time.

At Cameron Outfitters we teach these skills through hands on learning on over 800 sq. miles in the largest wilderness in the lower 48.

Packing mules is what we do

Our mule packing school provides everything except your personal gear and your spirit of adventure.  We serve great food, provide excellent lodging in our base camp have experienced mountain horses and mules and the best guides in the business who love to teach.  After completing our six day course you should have the following skills and knowledge:

  • Wilderness Laws, values and ethics
  • Safety around stock
  • How to choose and use pack stock, tack, and equipment
  • Hitches and knots
  • Horse and mule basics
  • Anatomy
  • Grooming
  • First Aid / Emergency shoeing
  • Planning and making pack loads
  • Planning a pack trip
  • Camping with stock
  • Recognizing problems on the trail before they happen
  • Dealing with trail hazards and obstacles
  • Health, safety and welfare of you and your stock
  • Basic wilderness skills and survival
  • How to deal with emergencies
  • Dutch oven cooking

Mule packing school classes are conducted during the day. Each evening is free time to enjoy fly fishing for wild western cutthroat trout, ride, hike, or just enjoy nature by the campfire.  

Whether you own your own stock, or are just beginning your backcounrty adventures, everyone is welcome and is sure to learn a lot.  Classes are limited to 10 students.  Group discounts are available for groups of 4 or more.

Accommodations and location

Students will stay in our deluxe Kit Carson Basecamp and we do a pack trip on the trail.  We are located approximately half way between Yellowstone and Glacier National Parks, about 1½ hours south of Missoula, Montana.
